Hullo mates,

Long time no see. I've been really busy. I have SATs on Saturday, and freedom for the rest of the year after. If you haven't realized by now, this is the second last blog post of the year.

In the midst of my business, I made myself a 'Things I need/want to do by the end of 2009' list yesterday.

1. Adopt a child with World Vision

4. Buy/make/draw Christmas presents
5. Make t-shirts

The list is still being made, and I obviously don't have much time left. I'd like to accomplish all that before 2009 me dies, so I will be abandoning this blog for the rest of the year. A heads up though- 2010 me is definitely having a better blog and probably better hair.

As busy as I may look/sound/be, chocolate cake and ice cream will always have that special place in my heart. Call me if you're up for a bite. Let me warn you that I'd probably give more attention to the cake.

Yesterday I went to the ends of the earth with my single, celibate, and surrogate father and MY BEST FRIEND IN THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD to an NS camp about 2 hours away from KL. (Yes, the world ends after driving for two hours) He got the opportunity to share in the religious studies' class, and he ~~pleaded with~~ asked me to come with him.

So he finished his sharing and there still was some time before the students were released, and being the loving father that he was, he invited me to talk to the campers. And while I was halfway ~~reciting my Facebook profile~~ introducing myself, someone stood up.

A lala guy. (The same one that asked me if I was Korean)

Oh wait.

It was a girl. (Guys in NS don't have any hair! Woops.)

"Can I ask you a question?"

"Yeah sure."

"Are you single?"

"Heh heh.. Nnyes I am?"

And the population of the female campers, including the pretty girl in row 2, rose to their feet, starting yelling ecstatically, looking at if other in unrestrained excitement, celebrating the availability of my love.

Now, at this point (or very much earlier on), you may ponder 'No way he's telling the truth man.' And the fact that my two witnesses will NEVER vouch for me doesn't really help. So I can only conclude to this. To quote a good friend, "The truth hurts."

There's something broken with the system.

As a musician, I have a natural aversion to politicians. In fact, I believe in democracy simply because I distrust all politicians equally.

And yet, I have a tremendous amount of faith and belief in humanity. When it comes to folks outside of the power schemes I might even trust people too much. I am ruthlessly idealistic, hopelessly optimistic. I believe the best in people. That's why I have to do something, because I feel that if people knew the truth, they would feel the same as I do. They would feel that something has to be done. They would care and things would change.

President Barack Obama last week requested a $1.5 billion emergency appropriation to deal with a flu outbreak that has killed 3 people in the US. I believe this action was in response to a nation experiencing "what could potentially be the biggest national emergency since Y2K" (genius comparison courtesy of glenn phillips.)

An estimated 300,000 folks have already died in Darfur and we do nothing... $0.00. And three people die of the flu and we spend $1.5 billion to figure things out. $1,500,000,000.00

I understand the need for precautionary measures but this feels like reactionary spending when I am reminded of the 2,500,000 people whose lives hang in the balance in displacement camps? What can be done for them? don't tell me nothing.

Obama: "We can't ignore the genocide in Darfur... We have to do everything in our power to make it stop. We have to act. Now."

Nothing? Years and years go by... and still... nothing...

Our national inaction sends the simple message that a whole crowd of Sudanese souls are not worth as much as an American with the flu. "Surely this is not true!" we protest. And yet our actions speak louder than our words.

There's something broken with the system.

We the people of the United States of America... We are the system. We are the media. We are the government. We are the twittering public. We the people of the United States of America... we own this place. We decide who is President. We pick the next American Idol. Obama our leader, is in many ways a follower of his people. In a state where the vote of the populous determines the next face of the government, a politician must listen to his/her constituents to remain in power. I believe nothing was done for Darfur because Obama doesn't think the public cares about Darfur.

Perhaps we can blame the media- perhaps the public doesn't care because they are uninformed, or at least under-informed? Yes, but in many ways "the news" is simply a vendor trying to sell a product, we tell them (with our viewing, purchasing power) what product sells. Britney, Brangelina, or Bosnia. We choose the news.

And now for the staggering fact: you and I are the problem and the solution.

I arrived home in San Diego early this morning, back from a run of shows up the coast with Switchfoot. The sun is setting over the pacific and my hair is still wet from an evening surf. In the distance I can hear the whistle of the Amtrak from LA heading south. I'm grateful to be home, grateful to have a place to live, grateful to have been given another breath alive on this planet.

But today my thoughts are divided, split between two worlds. As the sun sets over California it begins to rise over Darfur. The same sun. The same planet. Can it be possible that right now, two and a half million people are waking up in camps and refugee camps having been driven from their homes by violent means? Under the same sun, could it be true that almost half a million people have died of starvation, violence, and disease over the past six years in Darfur? Is this true?!

And if this is true, why has the media remained almost completely silent on the issue? Why has our government maintained it's current stance of inaction?

When presidential hopeful Obama was running for office he stated that "We can't ignore the genocide in Darfur. The international community can't turn a blind eye when children are being slaughtered and women are being raped. We have to do everything in our power to make it stop. We have to act. Now."

Nothing has happened.

And yet the sun is still rising over Darfur. And the sun still rises over me. And the sun still rises over capital hill... the same sun.

Today we celebrate mother's day with our moms and grandmothers. My thoughts drift overseas to the mother who is just now waking up, wondering whether she'll be able to give her children anything to eat.

Tomorrow I begin a three day fast for Darfur. Why fast? Because quite frankly, I can't think of a better idea. I reckon the best way to enter into the suffering of a group of people halfway around the world is to start with the basics. These folks are fasting without alternative, for three days I will fast with them.

Ladies,

If you've been contemplating life and occasionally thought about who you are going to spend your life with, how many kids you will have, and of course, what you're gonna make him for breakfast, read on.

But if you're male, manage over 3 fantasy football teams, and enjoy DOTA, hmmm... read on anyway.

Yes, I too, the pinnacle of awesomeness, ambassador of warm-blooded males, have taken thought into whom I will be venturing through life with. You see, I'm quite the visionary, and I think it's high time to start my search for a life partner. After all, I have ONLY 8 years left of planning before I get hitched.

So here it is- Phase 1.1 of my 20-phase plan- to find Mrs. Cedric. For starters, we'll be going through what I call 'The Wife Necessities', better known as Terms & Conditions.

Wife Necessities
(NOT in order of importance)

1. Must love either Switchfoot, Coldplay, Mute Math, or Muse. Loving of two, three, or all will just add sugar to the cake.
2. Must be baking-savvy. Should wife not be familiar in the ways of baking, (Sub-rule 2.1) wife will have to attend baking lessons with Cedric's sister, until she gets deemed 'you-can-bake-for-Cedric'-worthy.
3. Must have a height below Cedric's by an obvious amount.
4. Must understand, nay, accept the fact that men like computer and video games.
5. Must be active in sports, recreation, or dancing OR just have a hot bod.
6. Must NOT wear over 3 square inches of glitter on her body all at once.
7. Must be Christian.
8. Must smell nice.
9. Must be unable to finish her food, and call for Cedric to do her the honors.
10. Must accept and love Cedric's ability and need to freeload and slack.
11. Must love donuts and cakes.
12. Must have a mother that can bake or cook well. Should wife's parent own a restaurant or food outlet, Cedric's love for wife will increase.
13. Must agree to age gracefully. That means no spandex, glitter, or heavy makeup past 40.
14. Must wear skirts.
15. Must wear hairclips. The ones that Cedric likes.
16. Must embrace indie art, music, and movies.
17. Must not have any celebrity fantasies.
18. Must love dogs. (No really)
19. Must have required level of intellect.*
20. Must not be Chinese-educated.

Do you have any friends that go head over heels in love with someone of, ahem, less desirable qualities? In my vast experience in life, considering all my long years spent on planet earth, I can most assuredly assume that we've all come across this situation in our life one time or another.

Regardless of whether that friend might be like a brother or just a mere acquaintance, 'complaints' that "her eyelashes aren't long enough", "he talks too much", or even "she's wearing a BLUE shirt!" have crossed our minds, and sometimes, even slips our tongues. This is a form of representation of the freedom of human opinion and thought.

But what's THIS? A freedom that contradicts the other freedom? If that is so, freedom will not really be freedom, but prison instead. Then what is prison, if freedom is now prison, and what is REALLY freedom?

But enough of deep thinking and such. I blog today to drop a bomb of Cedric wisdom and discovery upon you, lucky reader. Because out of the mind of Cedric, renowned girl guru and love liberalist, a new freedom has been birthed.

Have you ever felt,
The feeling of getting hit in the tummy?
Where air is knocked out of your lungs,
And you start feeling all nauseous and dizzy.

That's exactly how our vampire tormentors felt,
When Super Ninja hit them in their stomachs.
All four of them at once,
Of one thing we were certain- Super Nina had guts.

One of the vampires growled,
Spun around and threw a punch at our hero.
But Super Ninja dodged them,
With all his style and gusto.

One by one the vampires tried to hit him,
But all attempts were in vain.
Super Ninja was just a blur,
Amidst vampire punches that fell like rain.

This went on for about a week,
But Super Ninja persevered,
With the future of our village at stake.
And for his safety we feared.

And then- as sudden as it were,
Super Ninja leaped into the air,
Like a soaring eagle into the sky,
And down at his prey he stared.

When our savior finally landed,
Everyone held their breath.
It felt as if the world stood still,
And it was as silent as death.

Super Ninja broke the silence,
With a thundering shout.
"BOOMSHAKALAKA!"
And his gleaming katanas flew out.

I don't wanna brag,
Neither would I like to lie.
So I'll just tell it as it is,
This was what I saw with my very own eyes.

But then again I'd rather not,
Due to some blog readers who are underage.
But I think it's safe to say,
That the vampires experienced Super Ninja's rage.

Not to be corny or anything,
But our village was restored.
The vampires were vanquished,
And things were fine and dandy- just like before.

As for Super Ninja,
He lives to this day,
A living legend,
Ridding the earth of evil dismay.

As much as you vampire fans,
May despise this composition,
Then let's see vampires beat ninjas,
In the form of a super cool poem.

But whoa- what is this,
That emerges from the horizon,

Could it be our salvation?

Draped in black,
From head to toe,

"Super Ninja."
He said his name was.
"I'm here to fight for you.
To fight for what you've lost."

Then he got into a stance,
Like a tiger to its prey,
Ever ready to strike,
To end its light of day.

"Err Super Ninja?
Why are you squatting like that?
There is no one around us,
The vampires are nowhere near us yet."

"Right." He said,
And shrugged off his stance.
He acted as if nothing happened,
To us he didn't even give a glance.

And he walked towards the hill,
Where we told him the vampires were,
Without an ounce of fear in his body,
To his destiny he stepped closer.

Would this be it?
Is salvation at hand?
Will the rule of the vampires,
Finally be ended?

It's been across the lips of the 'stunted', the Yao Ming wannabes, and to be blunt, ~~Joshua Yee~~ the short people...

"How do I grow taller?"

Yes, this worldwide phenomenon has been boggling the minds of many for the past few decades, with very little or no concrete answers unveiled with sufficient evidence provided.

Sure, parents told you that eating your veggies would make you "tall, strong, and healthy!", but look what happened to my sister.

If they said jumping or jumping rope would work, I would've been Yao Ming by now. (One of KL's state badminton team's best 'skippers'/'jump-ropers', thank you very much.)

But enough of 'has been' discoveries and unconvincing answers. I, Cedric Lavato (long story- will tell you about it next time), head of research at the Ihatoshortopeepo Laboratories at Tokyo, Japan, have traveled to NONE of the corners of the earth, to find the answers to growing tall. This, ladies and gentlemen, is it. This is the truth.

How To Grow Taller

1. DON'T eat your veggies.
As unbelievable as it is, it's been proven. Charles Scherbotski*got tired of his parents nagging him about consuming his vegetables for good, wholesome vitamins. So he stopped, and boy, no regrets! The next day his mum had to take him to Abercrombie & Fitch to get new clothes- he had grown 8 inches taller over 7 hours of sleep.

2. DON'T curse.
Foo Sun Yong* was renowned for his foul mouth. However, Foo wasn't a big-time gangster. He was 17, and only stood 4 feet tall. This often, or always, resulted in his vulgar mouth being physically 'punished' by almost anyone bigger than him (which is A LOT, by the way). Then one day, after such a beating from a 12 year old, Foo's lips were so swollen that he could not manage to utter a single word for the next week. As the week went by, Foo discovered that he was growing, and growing fast. By the time the seven days has ended, Foo was 8 feet tall. Now Foo goes hunting for those who've caused him much pain. (including me, so if you're offering security services, hurry! Call me at 1-800-I-ROCK)

3. Treat Cedric to a movie or meal.
No, really! I am THE benefactor of long limbs. Send me an email or a phone call, buy me a movie or a meal, sleep at night, and VIOLA! Somebody's ready to join the NBA. It's really THAT simple.

In the luxury of the couch, the television, and Season 1 of Chuck, I came across a rather catchy melody which led to the discovery of Eels.

Eels is an American rock band formed by singer/songwriter Mark Oliver Everett, better known as A Man Called E, Mr. E, or simply E. Other members rotate frequently, both in the studio and on stage. Eels' live shows include new material, interpretations of older songs, and usually some well-known cover versions.

When I came across the band I thought they were an indie, British rock band (which I love), but they're apparently popular in the UK and Europe, and have appeared in movies like Shrek, Hot Fuzz, and Hellboy II as well as popular TV series like Chuck, Scrubs, and the O. C.

The Beatle's catchy, mellow harmonies linger in the band's sound, which pulls off light 'n' mellow without emo getting into their music. A rare sort, but undoubtedly good. Worthy of a listen from anyone's ears.

We've all got our dreams- to get married, be rich, and to consume a whole piece of roti canai in just one bite.

Okay, fine. Not all of us.

But while this blog's author is in the mood of dreaming, he dreams of world peace. He dreams of an end to racism. But most of all, he dreams of the Superband.
